It doesn’t happen all that often among sexual partners, but some men and women do actually lose consciousness after having an orgasm. There may be different reasons for fainting after orgasm. Alcohol may be a factor if the person has been indulging. However, the balance of carbon dioxide in the blood may be the reason that most people faint after orgasm. Heart problems could also cause fainting after orgasm.

Carbon dioxide balance and sexual arousal
When at the height of sexual arousal while your body is leading up to orgasm, you are breathing faster. Breathing faster causes us to take in more oxygen, but at the same time we are exhaling lots of carbon dioxide (CO2). We need a healthy balance of carbon dioxide in order to breathe. Carbon dioxide drives the respiratory system. When our CO2 levels get too low in the blood, we may suffer from dizziness and can actually faint. Dizziness and fainting is caused when the blood flow is diverted from the brain to the genitals. In effect, the brain starves for oxygen for a few moments, and the deprivation can be long enough to cause loss of consciousness.

Fainting after orgasm due to heart problems
Some people who have heart problems have trouble maintaining adequate blood pressure during sex. Individuals with some types of heart arrhythmias may be able to achieve orgasm and then faint afterwards simply because after they achieve orgasm they are beginning to come down from their sexual high. It can be impossible for some people to maintain their blood pressure after having an orgasm and pass out. Anyone with blood pressure problems or heart problems should discuss the safety of sexual activity with his/her doctor.
If you faint after orgasm, see your doctor. There may not be anything wrong, but it is better to check that out, because it’s not all that common for this to happen. This Factoider knows two people who have fainted after having an orgasm. One person had a heart arrhythmia and the other person’s fainting was caused by hyperventilating at the height of sexual arousal.

How to prevent fainting after orgasm
It can be quite frightening to feel so lightheaded that you are about to lose consciousness. It takes practice, but you can train yourself to control your breathing during sexual excitement. Rather than allowing yourself to hyperventilate, control your breathing. Breathe in through your nose and out through your mouth. Purse your lips together so that you are not rushing the oxygen and carbon dioxide out of your lungs too quickly. You will notice that when you control your breathing, your sexual excitement will actually increase.

If you have a heart problem and you faint after orgasm, speak to your doctor about how you can achieve orgasm without passing out.
